In 1977, David Sutherland entered the world of luxury furnishings with a showroom in Houston, Texas. Over the course of the next few years, he recognized that outdoor areas were often left unaddressed by interior designers and architects. For all practical purposes, they seemed to be a “throw away” area. Sutherland believed that outdoor spaces should be seen as continuations of the interiors, a concept that demanded not only a fresh perspective in outdoor design, but also a revolutionary approach to outdoor furniture.
To realize his vision, Sutherland turned to John Hutton, the design genius behind Randolph & Hein and Donghia Furniture. “John and I wanted a decidedly indoor solution for the outdoors,” notes Sutherland. “We both contemplated the outdoors as an extension of the indoors, so from there, John created collections that would help architects and designers expand their creative visions and incorporate these groupings in their own designs.”
In 1991, over a couple of martinis, Sutherland and Hutton came up with a concept and embarked on a mission that would transform the outdoor furniture industry. Their original teak outdoor furniture collections were the first of their kind, introducing a level of luxury and comfort never before seen outdoors. Subsequent collections have been created through collaborations with internationally known designers including Philippe Starck, Terry Hunziker, Vincent Van Duysen and Bonetti Kozerski.
